Ilparpa

Ilparpa (Ill-par-pa) or New Ilparpa was first incorporated on the 25th, October 1979 by residents to support their efforts to obtain security of tenure; housing and essential services. Ilparpa is located at Lot 5713 which has been held by virtue of a Special Purpose Lease in Perpetuity for Aboriginal Communal Purposes since 1980. Ilparpa is home to speakers of Luritja and Pitjantjatjara. The 2005 population and mobility study identified that the resident population at that time was 106 people and that the service population was as high as 173 people . In December 2009 Ilparpa entered a Tripartite Alice Springs Living Area Sublease with the Executive Director of Township Leasing (Commonwealth) and the CEO of Housing (Territory) for a period of 40 years, under the threat of compulsory acquisition. This agreement led to an investment in housing and infrastructure by the Commonwealth and Territory as part of the Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program (SIHIP); and to the transition from community-controlled housing to housing management by the Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development (DLGHCD). Today Ilparpa is home to 13 households, prior to SIHIP there was only 11 households. It is predicted that the population of Ilparpa has seen an increase proportionate to the increased number of dwellings. Ilparpa is a Corporate Member of TCAC. Ilparpa is led by a Board of Directors, the President is a Director of Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC). Ilparpa is a party to the Local Decision-Making Commitment Agreement between TCAC and the Territory.
