RANP has developed training resources to assist remote communities that want to start Night Patrols.
These include :
- visits from RANP staff to discuss NP issues with members of the community. These can lead on to networking meetings with other local agencies and the development of protocols with local Police. Call on 0407790809 to discuss with RANP Co-ordinator Jenny Walker or contact us through the e-mail link below.
- a nationally accredited short course in NP worker training, available from the Drug and Alcohol Services Association (DASA). This is a 56 hour registered course with national accreditation which can be presented in a remote community free of charge. See here for examples of the certificates issued by DASA regarding the short course. See here for modules completed to gain certificate. For information call DASA on 08 89528412 or e-mail them from here. This course will be replaced at the end of 2002 by a course written according to the new competency standards. When it becomes available, we will change the details on this page.
- a legal skills course that explains the origins and principles of "whitefella law" in ways appropriate to traditional Aboriginal people. This course has been delivered in several remote communities in collaboration with the Institute for Aboriginal Development. This training package will have a resource kit to support the delivery which will be available later this year. At this stage, we do not anticipate the course having national accreditation, as the requirements for accredited course content are too restrictive. The course follows the interests of the local community rather than a curriculum document that may have no relevance.
- a number of video newsletters with information from remote communities about the operation of their NP services. A lot of these sequences are in local Aboriginal languages. Click here for contents of the following available editions -
- a visual incident report system to facilitate reporting to the local Council and funding bodies. This system has been used by the NT Police to press formal charges against offenders. It also comes as a visual database which links to the Curtin University National Night Patrol Database to facilitate the sharing of information.
